Tending the Fire: Staying Balanced as the Heat Rises

#balancing pitta dosha #pitta dosha Jun 06, 2026

As we begin to step into the rhythm of summer, the energy around us starts to rise—longer days, brighter sun, fuller schedules. There’s a natural fire to this season… one that can fuel movement, clarity, and momentum.

But just like any flame, without awareness, it can quickly become too much.

🔥 Holding vs. Carrying Fire
Effort is tending the flame…
feeding it just enough to keep it alive.
But when we grip it too tightly, push too hard, or keep adding more—
that same fire starts to burn us.

The practice right now isn’t about doing more…
it’s about learning how to work with your energy in a way that sustains you.

Understanding the Heat of the Season (Pitta Energy)

In Ayurveda, summer is associated with Pitta—the energy of fire and transformation.

Pitta isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s what helps us:
• Take action
• Stay focused
• Digest (food, experiences, emotions)
• Move forward with purpose

But when there’s too much of it?

That’s when we may start to feel:
• Irritable or impatient
• Overheated (physically or emotionally)
• Inflamed or depleted
• Like we’re constantly “on” with no off switch

Sound familiar?

This is your system asking for cooling, softening, and space.

Simple Ways to Cool the Fire 🔥

You don’t need to overhaul your life—just begin to tend the flame differently.

Here are a few gentle, supportive shifts:

Breathe to cool
Lengthen your exhales. Let your breath slow things down from the inside out.

Move with awareness, not urgency
Not every practice needs to be intense. Choose steady, grounding movement over constant pushing.

Time your energy wisely
Early mornings and evenings tend to feel more spacious—let those be your moments to move, reflect, or reset.

Hydrate with intention
Water is your ally right now. Add lemon, cucumber, or mint for an extra cooling touch.

Create micro-pauses
A few minutes of stillness between tasks can do more than powering through ever will.

Because your energy isn’t meant to be pushed to the edge—
it’s meant to be supported and sustained.

Yoga to Help Ease the Heat

When the internal fire builds, your practice can become a place to cool, ground, and recalibrate.

Think less “push”... more “soften and receive.”

Here are a few poses that help bring the heat down:

Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani)

- top left in image

A gentle inversion that soothes the nervous system and cools the body.

Try this:
Stay for 5–10 minutes, especially in the evening. Let your breath slow and your body fully rest. Drape a rolled blanket or sandbag if you have one over your feet for more grounding.

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

- top right in image

Grounding, introspective, and naturally calming.

Try this:
Widen your knees, rest your forehead down, and soften your jaw. Let this be a place to pause, not just pass through. Put a rolled blanket on top of your heels for hips to rest on or lie on a bolster placed vertically underneath your torso for more ease.

Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana)

Forward folds help quiet the mind and draw energy inward.

Try this:
Bend your knees as much as needed. Think less about depth, more about softness. Add a pillow(s) under your front torso for more ease.

Supine Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana)

- bottom right in image

A gentle twist to release tension and wring out excess heat.

Try this:
Stay for several breaths on each side. Let gravity do the work. Pillow under the knee as pictured feels so nice!

Final Thought

You don’t need to dim your fire to stay balanced.

You just need to tend it with care.

Let this season be less about how much you can do…
and more about how well you can support the energy you already have.

Because when your fire is steady—not forced, not overfed—
it becomes something that sustains you, not something that burns you out.
