Let Your Transitions Be the Teacher
May 18, 2025In yoga, we often celebrate the poses — the moment we land in Warrior II or melt into a peaceful Savasana. But what if the most revealing part of our practice isn’t the shape itself… but the way we get there?
The In-Between Moments Matter
Transitions in yoga are the quiet bridges between postures. They can be graceful or clunky, conscious or automatic. And they’re easy to overlook. But just like in life, the way we move from one chapter to the next often says more about us than the chapters themselves.
When we rush through transitions, we miss the chance to check in with ourselves. When we move with presence, we discover what’s really going on beneath the surface — where we hold tension, where we lose focus, or where we’re resisting change.
Your Practice Is a Mirror
Think about how you move on your mat:
Do you transition with care, or do you hurry to the next “goal”?
Do you breathe with intention as you shift, or hold your breath until it’s “safe” to relax again?
Now think about life:
How do you handle endings and new beginnings?
How do you react to the spaces in-between — the waiting, the uncertainty, the not-quite-there-yet?
The way we practice transitions on the mat gives us a chance to reflect on how we navigate transitions in the rest of our lives — relationships, jobs, seasons, identities.
Slow Down. Breathe. Notice.
This week, I invite you to pay attention to the in-between.
Linger in the movement from Down Dog to Low Lunge.
Move slower than usual between poses.
Notice where your mind goes.
Let your breath lead.
Transitions aren’t just how we get somewhere.
They are the practice.
They are the teacher.
